My name is Geart Jorritsma, I am a fanatic runner from the Netherlands who is trying to become one of the best Dutch long distance runners. I started my running career when I was 12 years old. In my first race I immediately became third in the youth race. Slowly I started to like running more and more, gradually I increased the amount of training.
For four years I never had an injury, I ran and ran and ran. When I was sixteen I ran around 50 miles per week and started to become pretty good. I ran in a big 5k race and finished just 5 seconds behind the boy who had ran the best 5000 meter time in our age category that year. With a time of 16.01 I was one of the only runners who ran a personal best on the tough road course. I felt great and felt like I finally was one of the fastest runners in my age category.
Feeling happy I started my cooling down, I started to run and felt a stinging pain in my right shin. Since I never had an injury or even felt running related pain, I just pushed through and finished my cooling down. After the cooling down I couldn’t even walk normal anymore due to the pain, but I figured the pain would be gone the next day. I was wrong, the pain wasn’t any better and for two months I wasn’t able to complete a training. I tried everything I could think of to get rid of this injury, icing, massage, stretching, taping and all kinds of exercising. I stopped running for a few weeks, but nothing seemed to help.
After the two frustrating months the pain suddenly disappeared and I was finally able to run again. With the hop that I could still run a cross country season, I started training again. Just after two weeks of training the same pain came back, but this time in my left shin!
For almost a year I have been going from one injury to the other. I have had injury´s in my shins, calves, knees, hips, groin, feet and hamstrings. I have experienced almost every running related injury. Being the fanatic runner I am, I didn’t handle not being able to run to well. I got really frustrated and tried everything I could to be able to run well again.
After a lot of frustration I found the solution. It was all in my running technique. Unconscious I didn’t move in the right way while running, which caused friction in certain places which in their place caused the injury´s. As soon as I found the solution, I started to systematically change my running technique. The injury’s disappeared like snow in the sun and I was able to increase my amount of training again. Now, two years later, running 85 miles a week and being in the shape of my life, I am fighting myself back to the top again. And you want to know what is the nicest thing? I never had an injury again!
I believe that you can get rid of your injury’s as well and that’s why I started this blog. I know how frustrating it is to not be able to run and I would love to help you, through this blog, to run injury free!
